Chandrayaan-I Impact Probe lands on moon
14 Nov 2008, 2035 hrs IST, PTI

BANGALORE: India marked its presence on Moon on Friday night to be only the fourth nation to scale this historic milestone after a Moon Impact

Chandrayaan-I Impact Probe lands on the moon surface (Times Now)
Probe with the national tri-colour painted successfully landed on the lunar surface after being detached from unmanned spacecraft Chandrayaan-1.

Joining the US, the erstwhile Soviet Union and the European Union, the 35-kg Moon Impact Probe (MIP) hit the moon exactly at 8.31 PM, about 25 minutes after the probe instrument descended from the satellite in what ISRO described as a "perfect operation".
Miniature Indian flags painted on four sides of the MIP signalled the country's symbolic entry into moon to coincide with the birth anniversary of the country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, observed as Children's Day.

"It will signify the entry of India on Moon," an ISRO official said.

The MIP is one of the 11 scientific instruments (payloads) onboard Chandrayaan-1, India's first unmanned spacecraft mission to Moon launched on October 22 from Sriharikota spaceport.

Developed by ISRO's Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre of Thiruvananthapuram, the primary objective of MIP is to demonstrate the technologies required for landing a probe at the desired location on the moon.

The probe will help qualify some of the technologies related to future soft landing missions. This apart, scientific exploration of the moon at close distance is also intended using MIP.

ISRO officials say that Chandrayaan-1 detached Moon Impact Probe as planned.

So srsly..decades after the United States Allleged moon landing India plants a flag on the moon. India...the country that provides 90% of the united States tech support is just NOW in 2008 planting a flag on the moon. This is yet another nail in the coffin for those true believers that thought that we had the technology years and years ago to actually perform a successful moon landing.

lol, guardian it's funny because it's true

SB the smart people in India come to the USA to work and up until a decade ago India was a 3rd world country.  They provide call center support because you can hire 50 Indians for every 1 american and English is their primary language so companies don't have to worry about language training.

China is also finally getting into space, they make all of our computers.

SB you realize that to get to the moon, it's not exactly the intelligence you need but the infrastructure.  Sure, there's rocket science involved, but any chump smart enough can do that with paper and pencil.  To actually build a rocket, you need a substantial industrial output.  The US had that in the 60s.  Well, we still do, but another part of it is justifying the cost- there's no profit to get out of the moon.  So a country has to have rocket scientists, rocket builders, and then train people to fly the damn things.  That's a lot of effort just to pick up some rocks.  In the 60s, it was worth it- today, not so much.  US won the pissing contest.

So when India and China just show up recently, it's not because they have something we don't- it's because they're just now getting something we've had for a while: an industrial infrastructure capable of sending up a lunar rocket.
